Marinus van den Berg

Marinus van den Berg studied Chinese at Leiden University between 1965 and 1971. After graduating he became assistant professor at the Chinese Department of that university and organized the modern language program. For his Ph.D. work he did a survey of the Taiwan language situation in 1977-78, and obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1985 with the study Language planning and language use in Taiwan: social identity, language accommodation, and language choice behavior. He is the organizer of the international research project Industrialization, Language Contact, and Identity Formation in China and Europe, which is sponsored by the Dutch National Science Council. As part of that project he stayed between March and July 2005 at the Chinese Department of Fudan University and helped to direct a study of the langauge situation in Shanghai.
