Leiden Consortium for Asian Studies
The Leiden Consortium, initiated by IIAS, is an intra-university network to further the scientific cooperation in the field of Asian studies. It consists of:

Beyond Europe

International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS)

  • IIAS (initiator and secretariat)
  • Participants from 60 different countries representing 500 institutions

Set up by IIAS in 1997, ICAS acts as the only global platform for representatives of academia and civil society to focus on issues critical to Asia. ICAS has grown into the largest biennial Asia events outside the U.S. ICAS meetings have been held in Hawai'i (2011), Daejeon (2009), Kuala Lumpur (2007), Shanghai (2005), Singapore (2003), Berlin (2001) and Leiden (1998). ICAS also publishes a book series. IIAS serves as the permanent secretariat of ICAS. An international council is being developed.

UKNA is a network of 102 researchers from 13 partner institutes in Europe, China, India and the United States. Its key objective is the nurturing of contextualised and policy-relevant knowledge on Asian cities. This will be done via a series of research staff exchanges starting in April 2012 and specifically targeted case-study-based research, all of which relates to the network’s three main themes of Housing, Heritage, and the Environment.

IIAS holds the secretariat of the network and was awarded a substansive grant under the Marie Curie Actions ‘International Research Staff Exchange Scheme’ (IRSES) of the European Union to coordinate the staff exchanges within the network.

Asian Borderlands Research Network
