Lecturer in Japanese Studies

The School of Languages & Cultures invites applications for the position of Lecturer in Japanese Studies.

The Lecturer is to be a productive and collegial member of a team of experienced researchers and teachers. The areas of teaching competence and the research specialisations of the appointee must complement and reinforce the existing strengths of the Japanese Programme, as well as enhancing the broader research strategies of the University. While scholars whose interests lie in any field of Japanese Studies are encouraged to apply, the School would be particularly interested to receive applications from candidates with research interests in contemporary Japanese literature and culture.The Appointee will work in the School of Languages and Cultures.

The position is available from July 2012.

Responsibilities 

The Lecturer in Japanese will be involved in administering and teaching Japanese language and literature and culture courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Academic staff in the School are normally expected to teach an average of 7 hours per week. The Lecturer in Japanese will also be expected to maintain a high quality research record consistent with the research strategy of the School and of the University and enhance the capacity to supervise MA and PhD theses in the Japanese Programme. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the administration of the School.

Requirements 

The successful candidate will be a native-speaker or near native-speaker of Japanese and will be involved in administering and teaching courses in Japanese language and literature and culture at both undergraduate and graduate levels. A programme of research is an integral part of the role and the appointee will be expected to have a strong research record and to provide MA and PhD thesis supervision. A PhD in Japanese Studies (or relevant discipline) is essential.

Tenure: Permanent

Salary range for the position: Lecturer NZ$68,191- NZ$82,152
