Cultural landscape transformation in Jambi, Indonesia
The Department of Human Geography at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is offering a PhD position in the Scientific Project C02 of the CRC 990:
The PhD position will investigate the questions how historical layers of settlement, land use and population structure determine the current cultural landscape and the living conditions of rural population in Jambi Province. The candidate will identify the historical drivers of land use change by focusing on a regional analyses of demographic development (population structure, migration, ethnicity), settlement patterns and political conditions for five different time periods.
Responsibilities
The main tasks will be the following:
review of literature and archives, including historical maps and statistics (Jakarta, Leiden), Indonesian surveys and census data;
empirical work/data generation in eight villages by implementing household case studies
with semi-structured interviews;
geovisualization of land use development and social settings with participatory
approaches and tools
Requirements
Your profile
you hold a Master
have a research focus on Cultural and Historical Geography,
you have experience in qualitative field research in the tropics,
you have experience in GIS (desired)
you are willing to collaborate with other researchers of the CRC
you are proficient in English (Bahasa Indonesia and Dutch are advantageous)
Conditions of employment
The project will be based in Göttingen, but fieldwork is done in Indonesia.
