Georgina Herrmann of the Institute of Archaeology, University of London has
been awarded the 1996 Laureate Rolex Award for Enterprise in the categorie
"Exploration and Discovery" for her project exploring the Great Silk Road site of Merv
(Turkmenistan). In order to ensure this famous site's preservation, she and her fellow
archaeologists are hoping to secure UNESCO World Heritage Status for Merv.
