The role of fabrics in Indonesia is a field of study in itself and is being treated
by numerous scholars all over the world. In this study Danielle Geirnaert
discusses the relationship between textiles and housebuilding in connection
with the ideas and values of the Laboya society, West Sumba, Eastern
Indonesia. Along with motifs and colours, the meaning of different techniques,
the division of labour between men and women, and the relatioship between

Padang in West Sumatra, is the centre of the Minangkabau people. In 1920
it had a population of 38,000 inhabitants, in 1990 this had grown to 600,000.
The modern development of this city is sketched in this study, while a number
of modern sociological theories about urban development are discussed and
tested against the actual situation in Padang.
