RESEARCH FELLOWS AT THE IIAS The composition of the IIAS-research fellows has undergone considerable changes since Newsletter no. 2 in Spring 1994. The following fellows are planning to carry on their research work elsewhere: Dr. R.J. Barendse is considering the possibilities for research work in Portugal and Spain. His next project will be the publication of the accounts of the Spanish invincible armada. Dr Barendse will co-organize the conference to be held on November 1-2, 1994, 'Transfer of Science and Technology'. Dr. L. Dong will probably continue his research on public personnel management in the People's Republic of China at another institute. Dr. C.R. Groeneboer has obtained a prolongation of his contract with the IIAS for a period of 2 months, and will then leave for Jakarta as an academic advisor of the Dutch Department at the University of Indonesia, working under the aegis of the Nederlandse Taalunie. Dr. B.J. ter Haar has been appointed to the University of Heidelberg, Germany as a Professor of the Social and Economic History of China. Dr. P.J. Pels is awaiting replies to several applications. Dr. R. Sybesma has been awarded an NWO-scholarship to conduct postdoctorate research on Chinese linguistics. The IIAS has also had the pleasure of welcoming some new research fellows, namely: Dr. M.L.L.G. Hockx who began his work at the IIAS on August 1, studying 'Literary societies and the literary field in pre-war republican China (1911-1937)'. Dr. Y. Zhang who started on September 15 with the research topic 'Administrative litigation in China and Japan'. Other fellows will arrive in the latter half of 1994.
