V.A. van Bijlert Burg. Patijnlaan 1062 2585 CE Den Haag The Netherlands Fax: +31-71-527 2615 E-mail: Bijlert@let.leidenuniv.nl Contributions to Bengal Studies This volume contains all the papers presented at the 31st Bengal Studies Conference, Georgetown University, May 3-5, 1996. The book arranges the papers according to the main themes that are always present at Bengal Studies conferences: culture and society, economics, history, language and literature, politics. The sheer variegation of the published papers reflects the variety of the Bengal conferences themselves, while many of the great names in Bengal Studies have contributed to this volume. Therefore the book contains much information for all audiences interested in both Bengals. Obviously, Bengal Studies and this volume cater to scholarly as well as general needs. The editors have done their best to bring out the volume as quickly as possible. This keeps those interested up-to-date about the state of the art of Bengal Studies. The only criticism which might be levelled is the absence of a subject index, but this is partly compensated for by the extensive table of content at the beginning of the book.
