IIAS Newsletter guideline for contributors 2009

Readership

IIAS Newsletter has a circulation of 26,000. Faculty and students in the humanities and social sciences make up 80% of our readership; the broadsheet is also sent to libraries, civil society groups and the interested public. 50% of our readership is in Europe, 20% in the Americas, 20% in Asia, and 10% in Australia and the Pacific.

Please keep our broad readership in mind. We favour essays that place research in context, contain clear argument and appeal to the intelligent layman. Please contact the editors with any questions or to receive previous issues: iiasnews@let.leidenuniv.nl

Style

  1. Our style guide follows The Economist: http://www.economist.com/research/StyleGuide/
  2. Keep formatting simple: Times New Roman, 12 point, left-alignment, double-spacing, italics for published titles and non-English words

Illustrations

  1. Digital photographs, maps, sketches, cartoons and artwork are welcome
  2. Illustrations must be free of copyright, or have permission from the owner. We have a modest budget for this
  3. caption and source for each illustration
  4. JPG or TIF files
  5. minimally 1,000 x 600 pixels
  6. sharp contrast

Referencing

  1. Keep notes and references to a necessary minimum - for quotations and others' ideas; uncontroversial facts need not be referenced
  2. Monographs: Dower, John. 1986. War Without Mercy. 3rd ed. New York: Pantheon
  3. Articles in edited volumes: Cutler, Robert M. 2003. ‘Conflict prevention'. Amineh, Mehdi and Henk Houweling, eds. Central Eurasia in Global Politics. Leiden: Brill
