Be part of the first Southeast Asia update in the Netherlands, extend your horizon and get briefed on current research on Southeast Asia.

  • Get an overview of on-going debates and recent research on Southeast Asia.
  • Take the chance to present recent findings, your research project or a newly published book.
  • Listen to other researchers who present current research projects, new findings and hot debates.
  • Meet old friends.
  • Extend your network on Southeast Asian scholars in the Netherlands.

Throughout the Netherlands, a large number of scholars are involved in research projects dealing with Southeast Asia. Whereas those working on comparable subjects or countries know each other well, the general academic exchange on Southeast Asia in The Netherlands remains rather limited. Moreover,  any comparative approach betweenregions and themes is often lacking. To fill this gap, it is our purpose to bring together researchers on Southeast Asia on a yearly basis.

We are presently putting together a program that comprises presentations of new and ongoing research projects, book presentations, and poster presentations. Moreover, the program provides time for discussion and get-togethers.

The main presentations share a comparative perspective and will deal with both mainland and peninsular Southeast Asia.

Among the speakers already confirmed are Willem van Schendel, Adriaan Bedner, Oscar Salemink, Bart Barendrecht, Juliette Koning, Mario Rutten and Amalinda Savirani.

Our explicit aim is to include young researchers and Ph.D. candidates both from the Netherlands and Southeast Asian countries. Anyone with an interest in giving a presentation on recent fieldwork results, present a poster on research projects or wishing to introduce a newly published book should contact the organisers before June 5. Papers and paper reading are not encouraged, presentations should be state of the art, short and informative. BA/MA students with an interest in Southeast Asia are welcome to attend (please register).
