Film screening and debate
Tue APRIL 7 / 19.30 hrs./ Filmtheater Kriterion Amsterdam
Over a million Dalits in ‘superpower India' are caught in a vortex of severe social and economic exploitation. Behind the front wall of political and economic power, however, lies an archaic society, the so-called ‘caste system'. The Dalits, formerly called Untouchables, are fighting against caste discrimination and for their rights for the past 3000 years. They still have to deal with oppression, exclusion and violence. India is currently becoming more and more a political and economic power. India therefore experiences a process of modernization, industrialization and urbanization, whilst these clear-cut traditions are not really challenged. On the one hand it offers opportunities: Dalits are given the opportunity to fight for a dignified position in modern Indian society. However, in their struggle for exercising their human rights they are still pushed away to the margins of society.
The documentary film Outcast Heroes (Fatusch Productions 2008, 45 min) represents an overall picture of a complex reality at the beginning of the 21st century. It can be considered as an important tool in supporting the ongoing struggle of international Dalit solidarity networks in restoring human rights for Dalits. The film features activities of prominent Dalit human rights defenders in their quest to tackle caste discrimination, untouchability and impunity.
In addition to the screening of the documentary, the program on 7 April features a debate on Dalits and local leadership. Ruth Manorama (Right Livelihood Award 2006), Ferri Ronteltap (director Outcast Heroes), Prof. Jan Breman (University of Amsterdam), Stephanie Joubert (Cordaid) and Ward Berenschot (University of Amsterdam) have been invited to participate in a panel discussion. This discussion will be moderated by Michiel Baas (ASiA/IIAS).
